Much has been said about the importance of employment as an empowering factor that gives a person’s life value and meaning. This is true as well for the person with developmental intellectual disabilities, whom like every other person has the right to be employed, reach his/her potential and earn a living. In recent years there has been a trend throughout the world and in Israel, to enable people with developmental intellectual disabilities to integrate and be employed in the open market. This serves both the individual himself and society, as it encourages values of equality, inclusion and acceptance of others.
Community employment services for individuals with developmental intellectual disabilities are in accordance with a continuum of policy terms of employment from the Division of Individuals with Developmental Intellectual Disabilities of the Ministry of Social Services. One of the services, "a program of supportable employment", aims to help people with developmental intellectual disabilities find work in the open market and gives both the employers and employee placement services, guidance and support, by a coordinator of supportable employment, over a period of time.
The "Shalem Fund" is a fund for the development of services for people with developmental intellectual disabilities within the local authorities under the auspices of the Union of Local Authorities. The Shalem Fund in conjunction with services in the community -the Division of Individuals with Developmental Intellectual Disabilities, the Ministry of Welfare and Social Services have joined together to produce informational videos on this subject.
The purpose of the video is to be used as an effective tool in the hands of the supportable employment centers to encourage potential employers in a variety of areas (hospitality, food services, industry, etc.) to integrate people with developmental intellectual disabilities in various employment capacities. The purpose of the video is to introduce and reveal a personal success story and a range of personal success stories to employers in different sectors and of people from different backgrounds and denominations. The video was filmed at several places of employment throughout the country.
