The Shalem Foundation believes that people with developmental intellectual disabilities have a basic right to live a normal life in their natural environment, to fulfill their potential and be integrated into social, cultural and occupational networks as much as possible in line with their personal capabilities, desires and needs.
Accessibility of information is one of the basic rights of people with developmental intellectual disabilities, as defined in Israel’s Bill of Equal Rights for the Disabled (1998). Together with the growing awareness amongst professionals and people with developmental intellectual disabilities themselves, this legislation has brought those who work in the field to create a simple language database that aims to aid people with developmental intellectual disabilities to expand their horizons and to acquire knowledge
The Shalem Foundation initiated the establishment of a professional forum that addresses the issue of cognitive accessibility. The forum began by creating a database that presents materials gathered from different sources that aims to make knowledge and information accessible to people with developmental intellectual disabilities
Some of the materials are written and others are in audio or video format
